HFA Senior Cup Fixture Details
With pre-season ramping up for teams as they look to prepare for the upcoming 22/23 season there is one trophy already in sight for two sides this July.
The HFA Senior Cup holds a lot of history, this prestigious trophy was first played for in 1950/51 with Shrewsbury Town taking the honours. Since then, many famous names have competed in the Cup. Manchester City, Charlton Athletic, Bristol City, Hereford United and Oxford United to name a few have their names engraved as winners of the trophy. The competition format has changed slightly over the years to fit the schedules and match the needs and reputations of Herefordshire clubs. In recent years it has become a one-off invitational match played for by the holders of the HFA County Challenge Cup. This season will see County Challenge Cup holders Hartpury University FC host League 1 opposition as they welcome a Forest Green Rovers XI to their campus grounds.
Hartpury University will compete in the Hellenic League Division One this coming 2022/23 season, Step 6 of the non-league football pyramid after winning the Herefordshire County League Premier Division (NLS Regional Feeder League) last term. The team had a very successful season rounding off 21/22 achieving the double by winning the HFA County Challenge Cup, taking the scalp of Hereford FC in the final.
Famous for being ‘the worlds greenest’ football club, Forest Green Rovers also enjoyed a successful 2021/22 season winning EFL League 2 and earning the right to play League 1 football for the first time in their history. The full-time professional Gloucestershire side will be sure to provide a stern test for their young neighbours as both teams face fresh challenges in the new season. The Herefordshire FA would like to wish both clubs the best of luck in what is sure to be an intriguing curtain raiser to the season, as another new name will be added to the impressive trophy.
